Discaria toumatou, commonly known as Matagouri, is a hardy, deciduous New Zealand native shrub recognised for its distinctive interlacing thorny branches. Naturally found throughout the South Island, it thrives in dry, exposed environments and is an excellent choice for native restoration, shelter planting, stock exclusion, and low maintenance landscapes. In spring, small greenish-white flowers appear along the stems, providing nectar for native insects, followed by small seed capsules. Its dense branching habit creates valuable habitat for native wildlife while also acting as an effective natural barrier.
