Good Shelterbelt Design

An effective shelterbelt is about more than simply planting trees.

Orientation

Plant shelterbelts at right angles to the prevailing wind wherever possible to maximise protection.

Height

The taller the shelterbelt, the larger the protected area. A shelterbelt typically provides effective shelter for a distance of around 10 to 15 times its height downwind.

Length

Long, continuous shelterbelts provide the best protection. Avoid unnecessary gaps, as these allow wind to funnel through.

Permeability

The most effective shelterbelts are semi-permeable, allowing approximately 40 to 60% of the wind to pass through. Rather than creating turbulence like a solid wall, they slow the wind gradually and provide more consistent shelter.
